Granny Dot’s Country Spot is approximately 17 kilometers from Tzaneen, with a winding road taking you through farmlands and the Agatha Forest Reserve to this B&B. We simply fell in love with this Spot. Six rooms are on offer, two removed from the main building but not far away, and another four rooms in the main building. We stayed in one of the removed rooms – let’s call it a cottage.
The two self-catering rooms (also the two forming parts of the cottage, but each with separate entrances) have fully equipped kitchens, braai facilities, and en suite bathrooms. Our room had DSTV and a fireplace for cold evenings – not all rooms have this luxury so check what you need when making reservations. Our kitchen allowed for full catering but some meals may be enjoyed in the communal dining room if arranged – we did and it was delicious! We spent a fair amount of time sitting on the porch with something to drink and snack on while absorbing the view.
The personal interaction with the staff and owners made our stay into one of those we will always have fond memories of, friendly caring and going out of their way to make sure you feel at home. We received a warm welcome and when we left we were seen off at our car. We were offered fruit by the gardener from the many fruit-bearing trees in the lush garden surrounding all the buildings.
Granny Dot’s is on an avocado farm surrounded by forests and farmlands. There are many tracks and winding roads one can explore, either on foot or by bicycle. This is the ideal place to exercise for cross country runners and mountain bike enthusiasts. The lucky ones may even catch a glimpse of some small and scarce animals like the Samango monkey, bushbuck, duiker, spotted genets, vervet monkeys, baboons, white-tailed mongooses, porcupines, bush pigs, jackals or even civet cats. A bit further away you will find organized activities like 4X4 trails, canopy tours, hiking trails, visits to cheese and crocodile farms. One can explore a number of road stalls and eateries in the area.
We, unfortunately, spent only one night there but that certainly was enough to unwind and recharge before we proceeded with our travels. Should we ever get the opportunity again we most certainly will be back to enjoy the view over the Wolkberg!
