Witkoppen Lodge lies within the Witkoppen Reserve,  three hours from Johannesburg, between Memel and Verkykerskop in Kwazulu-Natal. The whole lodge is booked as a unit, allowing for eight guests. We were fortunate to have the whole lodge to ourselves!

Old horse stables were converted into the lodge. Four rooms are available, each with a double bed. Each room has an en suite bathroom, and one room with a bathtub also. rooms lead out to a large stoep with views over the sandstone mountains. Communal areas include a large and well-equipped kitchen with everything one could possibly need to prepare any type of meal, a dining area, two lounges, one next to the kitchen and dining area, with a fireplace and braai area. Another building adjacent has a braai area and large stoep with great views, and this is the ideal kuier spot. A fire pit in the courtyard between these two buildings allows for long evenings around the fire.

We loved the privacy – you are the only guests when you book this lodge. The quiet was easy to get used to. And anything you possibly could need is available in the kitchen.

The owners took us out and showed us around. Two picnic spots are available but these are real picnic spots as no fires are allowed. We were also shown some bushman paintings on the farm. This is a nature reserve where you will find plains games, but with special arrangements one of the owners has cattle and this being part of the attraction of the lodge, horses also. We, unfortunately, did not get to see the horses but the views and everything else made up for it.

Plenty of track is available for hiking, jogging, and MTB enthusiast, so bring your boots, running shoes, and bicycle with you.

Unfortunately, no pets are allowed.

We loved this quiet, the views, and the facilities. Witkoppen lodge certainly is on our “we-have-to-go-back” list!
