Kruger National Park – Berg-en-Dal – Camping

Berg-en-Dal is in the Kruger National Park, approximately three hours from Skukuza. Camping, Bungalows, Family Cottages, and Guest Houses are on offer. We used one of the 72 camping sites to pitch a tent.

There is no grass on these sites so make sure you pack your protective groundsheets. Shared ablution facilities are available and in the communal kitchens, you will find hot plates, boiling water, and washing-up facilities. Trees provided shade on some stands but others may not have that luxury. All sites have power points and braai facilities.

A number of activities are available with the guided walks and game drives certainly the most popular. Self-drive game drives are the cheaper option if you have access to your own vehicle but there are rules to obey to so make sure you have a good comprehension of those as heavy fines can damage your budget if caught breaking any of those rules. In the camp, there also are perimeter trails with information in braille. An eco display can be seen and the wildlife film displays on most evenings are popular.

Some of the facilities in the camp include a shop, cafeteria, restaurant, and ATM. A swimming pool, fillings station, and laundromat make life a bit easier.

We doubt anyone would simply go to Berg-en-Dal to go camping only. Most visitors fall in line early mornings at the gate to exit when it opens in order to make the most of the game viewing the Kruger is famous for. You now are in a Big 5 Game Reserve with cheetah and wild dogs. In rivers and dams, you will find hippos and crocodiles. There are lists of trees and plants, birds, and other animals to tick off. Days of traveling on kilometers of tar and gravel roads will take you to these so you can appreciate them in their natural habitat.

This stay was part of 16 days, 15 nights holiday during a school holiday. We spent two nights in Mapungubwe, then three nights at three different camps in the northern part of the Kruger, four nights outside at Swadini, then back into the Kruger for the remainder of the holiday at another three different camps.

To return to the Kruger is not an option for us. The question is when…
