Thanda Safari Tented Camp lies in the Thanda Safari Private Game Reserve, between Hluhluwe and Mkuze, in northern Kwazulu-Natal. All accommodation consist of pre-erected, luxurious tents. There is one romantic tent, known as Jabula, with a double bed. Nine standard tents with twin beds and five standard tents with double beds make up the rest of the tents.
The tents are scattered around the communal area, all within a few seconds to a few minutes walk. The camp is only partially fenced and for safety reasons we were not allowed to walk between the tents and communal area after dark without an escort. We visited Thanda Safari Tented Camp on two occasions. in both cases, we were housed in units with double beds, a private deck, and private bathrooms. One tent had a bathtub and shower, and the other a shower only. both had an outside shower. This camp is off the grid but uses solar so on can at least charge cell phones.
We were most impressed by the service. In the promotional video to be found on the website, it is mentioned that guests are treated like kings and queens. That certainly is the truth. The staff went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We were collected by our field guide at the main gate upon arrival and our luggage was carted to our tent while we receive some information on the ins and outs of the camp. The food is more than adequate and caters for a wide variety of taste buds.
Two game drives (early morning and late afternoon) are included, so are three meals and refreshments with meals, e.g. coffee, tea, and fruit juices. All alcohol needs to be paid for. Bookings can be made at the spa and some meals are served in the boma – most meals are served in the communal hall. A lounge with bar facilities is the place where we all met and made friends, and for peace, we retreated to the Lapa. We did not make use of the curio shop but if accidentally left your hat at home you will find one here.
We have been to both the Thanda Safari Tented Camp (twice) and Thanda Safari Lodge (once). Thanda Safari, we are now awaiting our invitation to Villa Izulu!
